5 Surprising Jobs That Require a DBS Check
There are certain job roles, that wouldn’t especially surprise us when we find out a DBS Check is required, for example jobs that involve work with children or vulnerable adults. But there are some jobs that you may be surprised require a DBS Check, for example, a scrap-metal dealer needs a DBS Check, because they need to keep detailed records about who they buy scrap metal from, and this information needs to be carefully looked after so that it is not misused. These other five job roles may surprise you:
Traffic Wardens
This may come as a surprise that traffic wardens require a DBS, as typically you would expect traffic wardens to check parked cars, and ensure that they have a correct ticket, or are parked in areas at the right times of day. You expect traffic wardens to issue tickets to those parked illegally. However, since sometimes traffic wardens see unlocked vehicles containing valuables, or children left in vehicles whilst their parents have nipped into a store, people who wish to pursue a career as a traffic warden, require an Enhanced DBS Check.
Bar Supervisor
This is another job role that you wouldn’t necessarily expect someone to require a DBS Check for. But if you are a pub landlord, or a supervisor of a venue that serves alcohol, then you require a DBS Check. Alcohol can be easily abused, and a DBS Check is there to make certain that the person responsible for ensuring that alcohol is given to patrons in a responsible way (making sure no underage alcohol is served, checking no-one is served when they’re very drunk and disorderly etc.) is crucial. If it was shown that a person regularly had a record of alcohol offenses, cautions, warnings on their DBS Check, then they would likely be refused a licence to sell alcohol.
A Chartered Accountant
It may surprise you to learn that a chartered accountant requires a Standard DBS Check. This is because it is their responsibility to accurately record people’s income and expenditure. Therefore, accountants have intimate knowledge about people’s finances, and in some cases may have control over it. Accountants need to be closely monitored to ensure that the accounts are accurate and true to real life. If an accountant had a criminal past, they could be untrustworthy with other people’s money, and claim bills for fictitious work, or direct funds towards criminal activity. The government needs to ensure that chartered accountants are trustworthy and reliable. So, if you want to work as an accountant, you will be required to fill out a DBS Standard Check application.
Locksmith
Unscrupulous locksmiths with a criminal past, most definitely could abuse their job role for criminal means. Therefore, it is so important that locksmiths who want to be members of the Master Locksmiths Association need to complete a Standard DBS Check. The DBS Check is necessary because they will be opening doors to properties and businesses, and so it is crucial that someone honest, reliable, and dependable is doing this job.
Pest Control
This is an unusual profession to require a DBS Check, after all, they’re ridding properties of pests. But the fact that Pest Control people are frequently in and out of people’s homes, is why they need a DBS Check to show that they are trustworthy and reliable. In most instances a Basic DBS Check will be sufficient. But if someone will be doing Pest Control work in a location where they will encounter children or vulnerable adults, such as a school, nursing home or hospital, then they would require an Enhanced DBS Check with Barred Lists.
